Writing a letter in German

If you need a standard letter in German, e.g. for informing of a change of address, writing a sick note for school, or cancelling a mobile phone contract, check out the templates on http://www.briefform.de

Forms of Address (die Anrede) if you know who you are writing to:
Sehr geehrter Herr Schneider
Sehr geehrte Frau Goldschmit
Sehr geehrte Frau Dr. Herz

If you don't know the name of the person you are writing to:
Sehr geehrter Herr
Sehr geehrte Dame
Sehr geehrte Herren (Dear Sirs)
Sehr geehrte Damen und Herren (Dear Sir/Madam)

Examples of titles:
Sehr geehrter Herr Direktor
Sehr geehrter Herr Professor
Sehr geehrter Herr Bürgermeister (Mr. Mayor)

If you know the person very well:
Lieber Herr Kohl
Liebe Frau Kohl

Signing off the letter: Grussformel

Neutral expressions -
Mit freundlichen Grüßen (by far the most common)
Mit freundlichem Gruß
Mit besten Grüßen
Mit bestem Gruß
Mit besten Emfehlungen

The most formal expression is 'Hochachtungsvoll'. It can be used:

- when you don't know the name of the person you are writing to
- to show greater formality/respect
- when you want to sound slightly curt, e.g. to show impatience with a late payer.
